Fri, July 31 - Back From Comic-Con Pretty much the same as being at Comic-Con, this year, seeing as how it was, as they say, @Home. So let's charge directly at this week's cartoon! ![]() Fri, July 24 - Comic-Con @ Home Part 2 Normally round this time of year I'd be sweating behind a table in the Small Press Area at San Diego Comic-Con, trying desperately to draw sales out of random passersby in the same manner that a freelance dentist might draw teeth. Sadly, this year San Diego Comic-Con has gone virtual on account of plague. No table, no book sales. But there's still lotsa Comic-Con-y goodness to be had, so why not pop over to http://www.comic-con.org/cci/2025/athome and see what's up over there? Finished? How was it? Did you even go and check it out? It matters not to me if you did or didn't. I'm not your mother. In any case, here's a fun cartoon about "police": ![]() Fri, July 17 - Comic-Con @ Home So this year San Diego Comic-Con is trying something different: not happening. Ever since it started it hasn't not happened until now, so they're not sure how to handle it. So far the idea seems to be some kind of virtual San Diego Comic-Con. I don't really know all the details right this second. However, a detail I do know is that I've agreed to do some sketches as part of a fundraiser for the Cartoon Art Museum. So hey, why not click http://www.cartoonart.org/store?category=Comic-Con to bid on one, or some of the amazing other ones done by hot hot artists that people love! Then the next day I saw it was an episode title in the first season of Atlanta. So I'm very late to the Juneteenth party, though I can say with confidence I'm still two weeks ahead of the President of the United States. Anyway, how about a cartoon? ![]() Fri, June 12 - Live From CHAZ Well, not quite. I'm about 12 blocks down the hill from the fresh-minted Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. Already it's looking like last week's prediction of a return to normality by March 31 was laughably optimistic. What an exciting fun ride we're all on, with so many twists and turns! Now, for larfs, how about ![]() Fri, Mar 13 - Going Viral Well, I'm back from my Star Trek Cruise (it was fun, thanks for asking!), only to find my adopted home of Seattle in the moist, fleshy grip of a pandemic. Fun! I've been on mandatory Work From Home since I got back Monday night, with the prospect of it being extended at least until March 31. Let's hope this abundance of caution has the desired effect of, y'know, not having everybody drop dead of the plague. In any case, as noted in exhaustive and exhausting detail two weeks ago, there was no update last week. But I'm back, babies, and that means Bob the Angry Flower cartoons. And you read that letter "s" correctly at the end of the word "cartoon"; this week has plural toons for your consideration! First up we have a strip where I can't say for sure what I was going for, ![]() And then let's follow it up with a collaboration with one Lisa Martin, who was my co-guest on the inaugural episode of the Mike Griwkowsky Hour podcast back during the holiday. Not this week, of course. This week has an update. It's this! No, I'm talking about next week, a week which will have no angryflower.com update. Why? The reason is, I hope, simple. This time next week, I very much expect to be on a Star Trek Cruise, Star Trek Cruising, where I will have neither the ability nor the inclination to update my web site. Hence me warning folks about it now, a week before then, when I won't be warning anybody of anything, because there will be, as I mention above, no update. But just because there's no update next week doesn't mean we can't have an update this week, right? Quite! So let us update this week by updating this week to include the following cartoon, a rather dumb one called ![]() Y'all have fun, now! I certainly intend to! Sun, Feb 23 - Late! Yep, it's true, this is a late update, not falling as they almost always do on a Friday, but delayed instead until Sunday. The explanation for the tardiness is simple. This past Thrusday I raced home from work in order to hop a bus up to Vancouver to watch my good friend Keith Knight wrap up shooting on Woke, his upcoming show on Hulu. In all the fuss of packing and grabbing the bus, I forgot to do the week's update. OOP! No fear, though, folks. Bob's still around, and we've got a tasty cartoon for you, almost fresh, called ![]() Fri, Feb 14 - Emma So there's a new Emma movie coming out, according to the trailers, and it occurred to me that I'd never seen an Emma movie, or read Emma itself. I figured I should get in a quick taste of television impeachment coverage, a little from MSNBC and now Laura Ingraham's show on Fox. It's poop. Poopy poop poop. Bleah. So tiresome. Instead, let's ask a pertinent, searingly urgent question: ![]() 提升浏览国外网页速度 Yep, soldiers. Men of war. There sure are a lot of them in that new 1917 movie. Oh, sure, there are parts where there are hardly any soldiers at all. Whole handfuls of minutes go by where there are no more than two soldiers at any one time. But I assure you those minutes are made up for by other minutes in which there are many, many solidiers all at once. Yep. If you're looking for a film which features large variations in the number of soldiers it depicts, you could do far, FAR worse than to see 1917. Trust me! And, speaking of trusting me, ![]() Fri, Jan 10 - Newest Year Yet! Hey, dear readers, Happy New Year! Wow, it's kinda snuck up on me, the idea that next year is 2025. Cool year-name, that. Sleek. Sexy. It's got a sci-fi sheen and yet it's super contemporary at the same time. Lookin' forward to it, even if it's an appalling shitshow! At least we got out of the 20-tens without World War 1: The Reboot. I'm hoping it's because history isn't interested in directly repeating itself, though I'm not sure I'm ready for the wacky twists and turns it has in store. Guess we'll find out, huh? Okay, quick wrap-up of stuff I liked this year, no particular order: One Punch Man Enter the Gungeon The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Spider-Man PS4 Avengers: Endgame (I guess) The Mandalorian (sorta) HBO's Watchmen (surprise!) The Shaggy D.A. Steven Universe: The Movie Amazon Prime's The Man in the High Castle The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (really good!) and of course Bob the Angry Flower: exciting space adventure! Buy it! I probably missed some, but there we go, that's a list. MY list. I deliberately excluded people, places and experieces because Jesus, who wants to be here all night? Not me, man. Hell, no. And so here we have the strip for the last update of the year: ![]() There will be a bit of a pause on updates until I get back from holidays, but patient readers will be rewarded with a flurry of strips all at once! And now, let's have a quick dumb ![]() Fri, Nov 22 - Harmon Down Ooh, boy, kinda excited, I'm heading to Los Angeles on the weekend for the penultimate episode of Dan Harmon's Harmontown podcast. As I may have mentioned before, I'm quite late to the podcast party, only starting to listen to any of them in earnest maybe a year or so ago. Along with The Greatest Generation, The Greatest Discovery and Friendly Fire, Harmontown has become a reliable part of my weekly walk to work. And now Harmon is hanging up his Harmontown spurs! I dunno about you guys, but I am relieved to discover that, while I am very late to the Spider-Man on PS4 party, I have finally arrived and can now devote most of my precious waking hours to swinging around an erzatz New York taking pictures of monuments and tourist attractions. Whew! I shudder to think what would have happened if I'd not broken down and bought it. Who KNOWS how many hours I might not have spent web-slinging? Too many. Too. Many. What did I do instead, I wonder what you all ask out out and in your heads? Good question, and the swift answer is that I watched the 2002 film Jackass with a friend and another, and I laughed my murderous head off, constantly, forgetting absolutely what was happenning in front of me. Indeed, it's very possible I'll have seen it by the time you read this, dear reader. That's how close to the edge we are. Oh man, this new book is so close to being done. I can taste it. Taste it just like all those unfortunate sailors are tasting lead in their substandard tins of food on AMC's The Terror, which I'm watching at the moment. It's fun! That is, if grim death surrounded by icy void is your idea of fun. It's not everyone's. Anyway, enough about sailors wasting away from lead poisoning and scurvy, and enough about books and the completion thereof. Those two subjects don't really collide in this new strip, entitled ![]() Fri, May 3 - Endgame of Thrones Gosh, what a weekend last weekend was, huh? Avengers getting all up in folks, followed right up with a big ol' blast of Game of Thrones action-adventure! So much to not talk about for fear of spoiling people! Last week I said I'd observe a 1-week moratorium on Avengers: Endgame spoilers. I'm still observing it, not so much out of courtesy or consideration, but because I don't have as much to say about it as I thought I might. Enjoyed it, but not as much as most everybody else seems to have. Not that I have serious problems with it. I don't have a huge list of things I'd have done differently. I smiled frequently and had a pretty good time. But I wasn't knocked out and I wasn't super moved either. Maybe the best way to put it is to direct your attention here: ![]() Oh, hey, I've also got another book coming out soon! Book 11, if you can believe it! Here's what it looks like! ![]() Fri, April 26 - Endgamed Sorry for yet another super-brief update, folks, but I just got back from a lateish screening of Avengers: Endgame, and I gotta hit the hay. But for now, here's a quick strip about some economic promises and what I think is going on when you self-apply the hat of being ![]() Fri, Mar 29 - Fair EnUs I liked Us pretty well. A little different from what I was expecting, more mysterious and Twilight Zone-y than gut-wreching terror, which I guess I really should have expected after Get Out, so that's on me. It certainly is loaded to the rafters and then some on mirrors, twins, doubles, duplicates, masks, twos and elevens; it is a thorough doppelgangerama. There's always a tension between horror and ambiguity, and different films and stories handle that tension differently. Us handles its with clear intent, but that doesn't necessarily mean I really grasped it. I kept thinking I was getting an It Follows, but instead I was getting a, well... Us. At any rate, let's move on, on to the crispy world of cartoons, a world in which we may find ourselves faced at any moment with a terrible ![]() Fri, Mar 22 - Us Indeed? I don't have much to say this weekend other than to reiterate my suspicion that Jordan Peele's Us will be a goddamned landmark. Admittedly, I feel this way because I've been heavily advertised such. Yet I've seen a lotta advertising, and I think I can tell the difference between hype and possibility. Am I right? Let's all find out as we flock to theatres to watch Us this weekend! In other news, my sister Rachel Notley used her power as Premier of Alberta to drop the writ of an Alberta Provincial Election onto a coming Tuesday, April 16. Less than a month! Is this enough time for a campaign? Let's us all find out! I'll be back in Edmonton in the last few days, trying to avoid being put to work in order to earn a spot close and interesting to the 2025 Alberta election. The Premier being my sister is, let's face it, enough to place me in that position. We're not a huge family family but we still acknowledge each other. But doing work? I don't wanna, and hope that all the work is done by the time I get there, so I can just cash in on all the energy around. That's what it was like last time. This time, though, I think it's gonna be a fight right down to the fence and I'll have to get in there and exert. But of course, it's almost a month away, that time, so in the meantime, that is to say the current time, let's toss a cartoon I drew last week into the mix! It's called ![]() Fri, Mar 15 - Emerald City Comic-Con I'm not showing at ECCC this year, but I am attending. That's pretty much all I have to say about that, except to note that anybody reading this should swing by the Monsterpedia table and pick up Volume 8 of the eponymous Monsterpedia. It's fun! Last week's strip was a bit... easy, let's say. This week I tried to do a little more work. Did it pay off? I will let YOU, dear reader, decide! ![]() 进外国网站怎么加速 So, I saw Captain Marvel, and I'm not sure how I feel. Or at least, I'm not sure what to say about it. Or rather, I know that I wasn't thrilled by it, but I can't say why, exactly. Part of it is that I made the mistake of drinking liquids before the movie, to the extent that I had to hop out 15 minutes in and hit the bathroom again. That never helps. But even putting that aside, I just never quite hit that zing with it. I realize I'm second-guessing myself, cuz I don't want to end up on the same page as the dingdong internet haters, but no part of it matched or even got close to, say, the electricity and power of the No Man's Land sequence in Wonder Woman. Much as it pains me to admit, I got more of a Green Lantern feel off of it, in that Carol starts out as kind of a smarmy test pilot space warrior and ends up as a slightly less smarmy test pilot space warrior, and doesn't really seem to cover much ground in between one and the other. Fury is fun, and the cat jokes are amusing, and the business with the Kree and the Skrull worked a lot better than I thought it might, but overall I'm left a bit flat. Darn it. Maybe I'll feel differently after another viewing where my bladder isn't bugging me. Sorry to let everybody down by not having a tidy analysis ready to go. I'm still chewing over it in my head, trying to put my finger on where it missed, or where I missed it. I guess I'd suggest that they were so focused on making sure that she was a badass, they forgot to allow her to be weak. It's got nothing to do with her being a woman; heroes, even superheroes --especially superheroes-- have to have a moment of real crisis or doubt. Superman needs to have that kryptonite necklace draped over him and be pushed into a swimming pool where he almost drowns. Batman has to have the futility of his violence thrown in his face by the Joker. Miles needs to fear letting everyone down. Thor must grieve his lost family and friends. When Diana kills Ludendorff and discovers that it doesn't end the War after all, she is rocked to her core. And so on. Maybe I'll catch it on a second viewing of Captain Marvel, but on my first viewing, I just didn't see that moment. At any rate, how about a cartoon? How about this one? ![]() Fri, Mar 1 - Marvelady I don't know about you folks, but I'm real curious to see how Captain Marvel turns out. This is the MCU's shot at a big, sprawling woman-led superhero movie, and Wonder Woman already covered a lot of that ground with a character carrying 70-odd years of history and familiarity. I've been trying to catch up with Captain Marvel, or at least get a bit more current with the character. Last time I was reading comics with her in them, she was hanging out with the X-Men and calling herself Binary while freeing whole races of subjugated space whales. I gather a fair bit has changed since then. The earlier promotion seemed to have a good grip on what they were selling, with the "her"/"a hero" text fades in the trailers. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe I'm just unconsciously absorbing negativity from the MRA trolls on YouTube. I sure hope that's all there is to it. We'll see next week! In the meantime, please enjoy this Bob the Angry Flower cartoon, lovingly entitled ![]() Fri, Feb 22 - Normal Week Hmmm... y'know folks, I don't really have anything super remarkable to talk about for this week's update. The snow was two weeks ago, so that's old news. Some people are saying they wanna be president of the United States in a couple of years, but that news is a little too new and needs to baste a bit, I think. I think I've mostly transferred operations over to my laptop from my old computer, so that's not so pressing. The new book is shaping up to be a book at the appointed time. All seems on track. It's at times like these, therefore, that I find myself racing through a bunch of old Isaac Asimov books, and in that headlong rush, I find myself pausing to contemplate the life and times of the average everyday ![]() Fri, Feb 15 - Post-V I hope all you folks had a pleasing Valentine's Day, or at least a satisfactory, uncomplicated one. I'm typing this up the night before, so I can't speak for myself, but let's assume it worked out just fine and that I'm not in jail or deported or some such amusement. It looks like I'll survive the death of ye olde computere after all, with some adjustments. My old scanner looks to be pretty much out of the game, with a few final options left to try, but thankfully the ScannerPro app for the phone seems mostly able to pick up the slack. Base scans require a bit more cleanup and attention than before, but I'll take it. So! Angryflower.com soldiers on, ever proudly, into the future via the present! Which, naturally, brings us to this week's cartoon. It's a humdinger of a strip, a real corn-baster, tractor-grater, skin-peeler of a graphic gag, and I simply will wait no longer before presenting it to you all thusly: ![]() Fri, Feb 8 - DAMMIT!!! I knew it had to happen sometime, but I just hoping that time would never come. Alas, come it has: my trusty old computer, the one I brought with me to Seattle 14 years ago, appears to have given up the ghost. This is a serious bummer, not least because I have a bunch of files on it, but it's the only thing that can connect to my old but trusty scanner. Not exactly sure what I'm gonna do about that. May be spending some time on the good ol' internet, seeing if I can find Windows 10 drivers for a 20-year-old scanner. Wish me luck! Vancouver was great, by the way. Got to see some of Keith Knight's Woke pilot get shot, some really crucial scenes, including a really gorgeous final shot. Fingers crossed on that thing going to series! Now let's see if we can stumble through hand-coding all the HTML to upload this week's strip, shall we? Here... we... go! ![]() Fri, Feb 1 - Quick! - Whoops! Sorry to be in such a rush, dear readers, but I'm hopping on a bus in just over an hour to visit Vancouver, BC, Canada to watch Keith Knight do some making of a TV show pilot. And I don't want to be late! So I'll drop this little reminder, this little mnemonic, 'y'know, so folks don't forget that ![]() Sat, Jan 25 - Whoops! Sorry, dear readers, sorry for the lateness of this week's update. I'd like to be able to blame it on being unavoidably delayed by ![]() but let's face it, he's not that effective. Fri, Jan 18 - Updating the Date, And Urf, sorry, readers, for delivering to you this Friday a burble of barely-spoken nonsense regarding my thoughts about how updating the site on Fridays feels strange to me in this new world where the strips go live on the Internet on the Mondays before the Fridays, as opposed to the strips appearing stamped on sheets of disposable but easily available paper up in Edmonton every Wednesday. I'm still working out how this feels. I hope you'll grant me some time to consider it. As it turns out, if you do or if you don't, neither of your choices will prevent me from deciding to, in the present tense, ![]() . 手机浏览外国网站很慢 Gosh, have you guys noticed that at certain sizes and in certain fonts, the letter "B" slightly resembles the letter "H"? Me neither! So here we are in 2025, and I can think of nothing more urgent than quickly and efficiently catching up on all the Bob the Angry Flower cartoons that haven't been posted yet. There are so many! Let's review. When last we checked, Bob had just embarked on cartoon relations with his ![]() Having completed what seemed like a single cartoon's worth of robot lawyering adventure, fate now states firmly and like Yoda that there is another, to wit ![]() We now do a hard left into some old television parody be asking exactly who shall be chosen ![]() And once asked, twice considered, as we plunge ahead in the sequel with the sexy title, ![]() Zow! So many cartoons! Or, you know, you could read them on Gigcity.ca, where they appear on Mondays. Either choice can function! Wed, Dec 19 - 2018 4-Evr Well, folks, looks like we're wrapping up this glorious year, and not a moment too soon. Yes, I'm aware that there are almost two weeks left in 2018, but I"m heading back to Edmonton for the holidays, so this'll be the final update until 2025. FUN! I hope y'all have yourself an enjoyable holiday, however you celebrate it, and we'll pick this up in the second week of January. I'll leave you with the following cartoon to bear the year to rest, but you should be able to get new Bobs on Monday for the next few weeks over at 解决国外网站很慢, so, y'know... DO! Excelsior! ![]() Fri, Dec 14 - Back At It Okay, no more girnin' on about newspapers and the unexpected nonexistence of same. Time to look forward, ever forward! And what better way to do that than by drawing a cartoon about a 10-year-old movie? I hereby submit for your approval: ![]() Fri, Dec 7 - The Great Beyond Kinda weird, not having Vue or See or the Journal or the Sun or any newspaper printed on paper running Bob. Big thanks to the folks at Gig City in Edmonton for picking up Bob in a web-way, with the hopes that I might maybe get a little bit paid making these silly things, these reasons for living, these drawn cartoons. Speaking of, let's celebrate new beginings and even newer newness with a top-shelf ![]() Fri, Nov 30 - End of an Era And now dear readers we must pause, and give silence, as this week marks the passing of Vue Weekly, the only print outlet still running Bob the Angry Flower. Fear not, dear readers. Bob shall continue. But this will be the first time since 1992 that the cartoon has not had a real honest genuine honest-to-ghost print newspaper as host, and now must pass on into the nebulous realm of webcomichood. Let us bow our heads and offer up a silent prayer as we muse on the passage of time and the changes of the world. ![]() Fri, Nov 23 - A Hair Late Last week's update was a bit early, this one's a hair late. I'm not trying to establish a rhythm with this or anything; it's just how it turned out. THanksgiving sloth will do that to you. I drew this strip a few weeks ago, just before the mid-term elections, but my well-documented superstition regarding Bob cartoons and real-world events kicked in and prevented me from publishing it the week of the election for fear of jinxing the whole affair. Now the election is receding in our rear-view mirror, it's time to pull out this old(ish) chestnut and boldy state that ![]() 解决国外网站很慢 I'm heading down to L.A. this weekend to fart around and see some HarmonQuest tapings, so that means we all get this week's Bob the Angry Flower cartoon a day ahead of time. That's right! That's the kind of thinking-ahead, looking-after-the-interests-of-my-readers stuff you can count on here at angryflower.com, a result based on yards and neverending yards of well established ![]() Fri, Nov 9 - Whew... It wasn't the hands-down repudiation of assholery and fascism that I was looking for, but it got the job done. Sure, I would've liked Beto O' Rourke to kick known skinsuit Ted Cruz out of public life, and it would've been heartening to see sanity take hold and prevail in Florida, but at least the Democrats didn't manage to fuck up taking the House back, so I'll call it a win. Would've been nice if Nancy Pelosi hadn't issued a tone-deaf call for civility and non-partisan compromise that exactly no Democrat was looking for, but s |
